What is an Eagle Scout Project?

Eagle Scout is the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America, an honor that only about two percent of eligible Boy Scouts have achieved since the program was started in 1912.

To earn the rank of Eagle Scout, a Boy Scout must complete twenty-one merit badges, including eleven that all Eagle Scouts are required to receive.  These required merit badges include First Aid, Personal Fitness, Family Life,  Citizenship in the Community, Nation, and World, and Emergency Prepardeness.  These all teach life skills that are consistent with the Boy Scouts of America's goal to prepare young men to lead the next generation.

To become an Eagle Scout, it is also required that you perform a project to benefit the community.  This project is designed to force a young man to demonstrate his leadership skills, while enhancing the community at the same time.  When developing this project, there are no requirements on the scope of the prject or hours put into it.  Rather, the impact of the project is emphasized, and Scouts are guided to select projects that will have a positive impact on thier local community.  It is important to note that an Eagle Project may not be a fundraiser of any kind; there has to be a tangible result in the end.
